Episode 8 - TOW Ross's Teeth

Review
Synopsis: Ross has his teeth whitened just before a date but leaves the gel on much longer than he was supposed to. Chandler warns Joey about Janine bringing too much girly stuff into his apartment. However Joey becomes quite attached to it all. Meanwhile a misunderstanding with Phoebe leads to Rachel’s boss believing that Rachel is sleeping with her boss, Ralph Lauren. The Good: Despite the many problems with this episode it is fun to watch. It is harmless, bubbly entertaining stuff. Ross is excellent and really makes his teeth gimmick funny. Joey is fun as well as he becomes more girly. Rachel is also fine as she battles Phoebe’s stupidity and her boss’ prejudices. The use of guest star Ralph Lauren is ingenious. He has two lines and both times ignores Rachel and Kim – but Kim believes what she wants to about his reactions, which is pretty funny. The Bad: Why does Ross’ date get angry at him for having very white teeth and why does he then have a go at her? It seems like the writers couldn’t think of a funny way to end the story so they just had them shout at each other. As fun as the Rachel story is, why does she have to add the very unsubtle line about her never being promoted? It slightly drags down what could have been a clever scene. Joey becoming attached to feminine decorating is ok but it doesn’t suit his character particularly and it isn’t mentioned again. The writers just keep hacking away at the credibility of the show with some of their lines – especially Phoebe not knowing where Rachel works and then the friends all rushing off to work as if they didn’t know they were supposed to be there. Best Line: (Ra) “Phoebe what am I gonna do?”
(P) “Well, the only thing you can do sleep with Ralph Lauren.”
(Ra) “I’m not gonna sleep with Ralph Lauren. I mean I could, but I wouldn’t.”
(P) “Oh sleep with Kenny.”
(Ra) “That wouldn’t help me.”
(P) “Oh yes it would!” Best Friend: Rachel
