Episode 11 - TOW The Apothecary Table
19 January 2009
Review
Synopsis: Rachel buys furniture from Pottery Barn but has to lie to Phoebe who hates mass produced furniture. Meanwhile Joey daces a dilemma as Janine doesn’t like Chandler and Monica. The Good: Ross is funny as he defends Pottery Barn with passion and then tries to stitch up Rachel after she mocks his furniture. It is also a nice touch to show Ross and Rachel having similar taste in furniture, a reminder of their bond. Joey comes across as reasonable and it’s a nice development that he would break up with a girl for his friends who he says are like his family. The Bad: The whole Phoebe and Rachel story is awful. Phoebe is annoying to watch at first as her gullibility is pretty patronising television. But then she sells out her entire moral code for pretty furniture before the final nail in the coffin when she still thinks the apothecary table is authentic. She is portrayed as an idiot and she looks like one. The whole plot makes her unlikeable and is a pretty childish, pointless plot development. Meanwhile Elle Macpherson is passable in her role but the story is paper thin. She doesn’t like Monica and Chandler so like children they all start calling each other names. Monica in particular is characterised in such a childish, unreasonable way that she is unrecognisable from the character created in season one. This episode again demonstrates an unsophisticated sense of humour and a thin grasp of how to make interesting plots. Best Line: (Ro) “You know what I think. She’s just weird. You know, it’s because she’s a twin, twins are weird.” (Ra) “Ross, she’s not weird she just likes her stuff to be one of a kind.” (Ro) “You know what’s not one of a kind? A twin!” Best Friend: Ross
