Episode 8 - TOW The Giant Poking Device (2)
17 January 2009
Review
Synopsis: Phoebe is reluctant to go to the dentist because every time she does someone dies. When she returns everyone is fine except “Ugly Naked Guy”. Ross leaves Ben with Rachel for the day and Monica accidentally bangs his head against the wall. Meanwhile Joey tells Chandler about Janice cheating on him and he confronts her. The Good: Chandler stepping aside after Joey’s advice is a good resolution to Janice cheating on him. Her goodbye is a sad moment until Chandler loses the plot. The Phoebe story is a fun idea. The Bad: This is a pretty disappointing episode. The poking device shouldn’t be able to cover the distance they imply it does. It’s a very random idea which would be great if it was funny but it isn’t. Similarly the Chandler and Janice story is good until he gets desperate and holds onto her shoe. I suppose to some extent it fits his character as he fears being alone forever but it is not enjoyable to watch and it feels like the writers are trying to make the scene funny which they didn’t have to. The even sadder part is that this is the last time we see Janice resembling a human being. From now on the writers flush all their good work down the toilet and just make her into a joke. The Ben babysitting plot is bad as well. As Ross says, children bump their heads; there was no need for the girls to panic. Especially Monica who is supposed to be maternal and sensible and here she flaps about trying to get laughs. Best Line: (J) “Hey Ross, I got a science question. If the homo sapiens were in fact homo sapiens. Is that why they’re extinct?” (Ro) “Joey, homo sapiens are people.” (J) “Hey, I’m not judging.” Best Friend: Chandler
