Episode 4 - TOW The Metaphorical Tunnel
17 January 2009
Review
Synopsis: Chandler decides to be committed to Janice but ends up scaring her off. Joey asks Phoebe to get him various auditions after she does a good job faking her way through a phone call. Ross tries to convince Ben to play with masculine toys. The Good: Ross is fine in his role; it is a harmless fluff story. Chandler is entertaining and it is a good character episode for him showing him confronting his fears. The Bad: However there is a lot to not like here. The Phoebe and Joey story is handled fine, but the upshot is that he seems pathetic. The rejections make him look like a terrible actor and an idiot for not thinking they were true. It’s all very well for him to be a dumb character but this is his calling which he is supposed to have some talent at. Meanwhile Chandler overacts and tries to squeeze every drop of humour out of his scenes, which makes him appear unconvincing. Also Rachel and Monica appear very judgemental of men, despite Chandler (and Ross) providing them with evidence to the contrary. A very below-par effort by all concerned. Best Line: (J) “In this case you have a fear of commitment. So I say you go in there and you be the most committed guy there ever was.” (Ra) “Amazingly that makes sense.” (C) “You think?” (J) “Oh yeah. Go for it man. Jump off the high dive, stair down the barrel of the gun, pee into the wind.” (C) “Yeah, Jo I assure you if I’m staring down the barrel of a gun, I’m gonna be pretty much peeing every which way.” Best Friend: Chandler
