Review
Synopsis: The friends are torn between Ross and Rachel who both want to hang out with the group but avoid each other. The friends all hate the situation, particularly Chandler, as it reminds him of his parents divorce. He takes up smoking again. Rachel takes the friends on a ski trip but they run out of petrol on the way and have to call Ross for help. The Good: The best thing about this is that this episode happened at all. Most sit-coms don’t dedicate time like this to a serious story which isn’t funny. A bitter break-up in a close group would cause serious problems and they are dealt with well here. Chandler does his best to keep things funny with his sarcasm. The scenes where the friends express their discomfort with the situation are excellent. Phoebe’s chirpy randomness makes her likeable here. The Bad: This is not funny stuff, understandably. There is also a joke about Joey being really stupid (help written backwards) which jars against him being very inventive when they need to break into Phoebe’s taxi. A bit of lazy writing which only gets worse from here. Best Line: (Ro) “You know what, that’s ok alright. I don’t need any of you to stay ok? Nobody stays.”
