Episode 16 - TOW The Truth About London

19 January 2009

Review

Synopsis: Monica and Chandler agree to let Joey marry them. But in the process Chandler learns that Monica wanted to sleep with Joey the night they got together. Phoebe takes pills for a headache and then becomes paranoid about the side effects. Rachel watches Ben for an hour and teaches him practical jokes which Ross is not happy about.

The Good: Rachel’s character is spot on in her scenes with Ben. She has never been good with kids and her use of tricks her sisters played is a very nice touch when interacting with the only child Ben. Ross’ reaction and the various tricks are both funny and realistic. Joey is good when being sleazy and it is a fun idea both to see how Chandler and Monica got together and also how Joey and Monica might have ended up. A story which produces good humour and nice character moments.

The Bad: Phoebe and the side effects is an entirely superfluous plot. Monica and Chandler’s actual flashback to London is a little silly. The way they talk about everything and see each other naked is all played to make the audience laugh, not to pay reality even a cursory visit. Joey’s awful vows speech is silly. However the good outweighs the bad here in a fun episode.

Best Line: (Ro) “Rachel, what are you doing here?”
(Ra) “I’m just visiting my good friend Carol.”
(Ro) “Your good friend?”
(Ra) “Yeah”
(Ro) “What’s her last name?”
(Ra) “Carol…lesbian.”
(Ro) “Nice.”

Best Friend: Chandler
