Episode 14 - TOW They All Turn Thirty
19 January 2009
Review
Synopsis: We jump between Monica, Ross, Phoebe and Rachel’s 30th birthdays and the various problems and celebrations they face. The Good: This is a well crafted episode. The characters would not have all turned thirty at the same time, so to avoid having constant birthday celebrations the writers cram them all into one show. And they make the most of it. Monica being drunk is a nice back drop for good jokes with Jack Gellar and Ross. Rachel is very convincing as she contemplates her life plans and breaks up with Tag. Finally the show sends off a character in an emotionally resonant fashion. Joey and Chandler both pop up in the stories to make jokes and Ross is funny throughout including his simple sports car story. The Bad: The Ross car plot seems a little like the writers trying to recreate the “pivot” scene from 516. Monica acting drunk is a bit hit and miss and it doesn’t seem to say anything profound about her character. These aren’t troubling flaws though in an episode filled with nice jokes and moments. Best Line: (C) “Oh well not as lovely as you (to Judy). I can’t believe you would have a 30 year old daughter and you (to Jack) I can’t believe that you would have a tux that’s 30 years old!” (Jack Gellar) “It’s older than that. Ross was actually conceived right near this tuxedo.” (C) “Ohhh” (Ra) “Hey everybody hide, hide I saw her she’s coming.” (C) “Ok ok everybody down, everybody down.” (Sound of ripping) (JG) “Crap.” Best Friend: Phoebe
